A good way to help prevent chewing is teaching your dog to really love one paticular toy, similar toy a child loving a blanky. This does not mean take away all their other toys but to build the bod they have with one of them. My dog's toy is the tennis ball. Any time she is board she goes for it and either chews on it or plays fetch with it. There are several things you need to do to help grow this bond. The first thing is to choose a toy. I really like the Kongs for this. They are the red snowman looking toys. You can find them at almost any pet store. If your dog is one that likes to play fetch try to throw the kong for them about 10mins a day for several weeks. Creating an association with you to the toy will really help your dog deal with the stresses of not being able to get your attention because they associate you to the toy.  The third thing I suggest is having the toy available for your dog when they become board. It's also a good idea to put some type of treat in the kong too. Peanut butter can work well. A small amount of peanut butter is all that is required, just spread a thin layer around the inside of the toy and most dogs will lick on it for atleast 10 -15mins. If you do this once a day eventually the kong will become your dogs favorite toy and can help save your furniture.
